During the weekend Netflix stopped supporting AirPlay capability and informed users to the wireless streaming feature of the change via service support page. It was originally speculated this was a response to Apple upcoming TV+ service, but it turns out it's actually something different.

"We want to make sure our members have a great Netflix experience on any device they use," a Netflix statement explains. "With AirPlay support rolling out to third-party devices, there isn't a way for us to distinguish between devices (what is an Apple TV vs. what isn't) or certify these experiences. Therefore, we have decided to discontinue Netflix AirPlay support to ensure our standard of quality for viewing is being met. Members can continue to access Netflix on the built-in app across Apple TV and other devices."

It's unclear exactly how many iOS device owners regularly made use of AirPlay support for Netflix. The company has an app for Apple TV already, of course, and the smart TVs that AirPlay 2 support is being rolled out to typically have a preloaded Netflix app as well. The loss of the streaming feature may well end up being criticized by more people than it actually impacts in day to day use. Netflix has supported casting content with Apple AirPlay since 2013.
